Vince Palumbo, 8th Grade Black Belt Cacoy Doce Pares and Stick Fighting World Champion, Visits Jakarta Indonesia VincePalumbo is one of the most senior ranked Australians in the Cacoy Doce Pares Eskrima World Federation (CDPEWF) Pilipino stick fighting system of Arnis Eskrima. He has trained multiple martial arts and to his credit has competed in over 200 fights in the ring including boxing, grappling, kickboxing, karate, and stick fighting for over thirty years. Vince was invited to Jakarta by Cacoy Doce Pares 5th Dan Instructor, Glen Gardiner, the younger brother of Cacoy Doce Pares 7th Dan, Martin Gardiner to conduct a week long seminar on Master Cacoy Canete’s unique system of stickfighting. Vince a multiple world title holder in this art concentrated on developing the Jakarta club members’ competition stick fighting ability and ring technique. Training consisted of two sessions a day, 2 hours in the morning and three hours in the evening. The intensity of the sessions focused on match fitness and fight training. Technique development was always structured to also enable maximum endurance and fitness development with the seminar centered on as much full contact sparring as possible. The Jakarta Club members had an opportunity to spar single stick, double stick, and single stick no body armor except for head gear, gloves, elbow, and knee protectors. At the completion of the week the improvement in the participants was very noticeable. This was a direct result of Vince’s infectious and intense teaching style empowering participants to overcome the challenges of full contact fighting with either single or double stick. At the completion of the seminar Vince himself had fought well over 120, 2 minute rounds. This gave the participants including novices the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the ring conditions and face off with a multiple world title champion. This in itself was a tremendous benefit boosting confidence and fostering an exceptional learning environment. It was impressive for an instructor and fighter of Vince’s experience to favorably comment on the personal attitude and eagerness of all the participants to learn and actively participate in all activities never declining or shying away from an opportunity to fight. It was this attitude which enabled them to overcome any aversion or uncertainty that was held at the beginning of the seminar and for them to establish some rightly deserved and very high, personal achievements. The Jakarta members of the CDPEWF are planning to compete in the next CDPEWF World Titles to be held in Cebu in November 2006. The club is relatively new only being established in January 2006 with the majority of the members being new to Pilipino stick fighting. The timing of Vince’s visit was coordinated to boost the prospective competitor’s ability allowing them to now focus on match fitness and ring technique while being introduced to the competitive reality of full contact stick fighting. The remaining four months before the titles will see these men and women concentrate on perfecting fitness, techniques, and honing the skills that were learnt during Vince’s week long visit. Vince intends on returning to Jakarta early in November immediately prior to the up coming World Titles. He will be accompanied by his team from Adelaide. Both teams will train together for approximately a week before departing to Cebu where the titles will be held during the period 24-26 November 2006.
